Gael and German Old Stout, a German veteran of the Franco-Prussian War and his wife lived in a house west of Paddock =s Corners on the south side of the 2nd concession, possibly on lot 14.On a certain occasion. Mrs. Stout who spoke only German was searching for her small children and called at Big John McDonald =s and his wife Peggy who spoke only Gaelic fluently. Also searching for the lost children was Charlie Schaumberg who spoke English and German. My grandmother Gilchrist who spoke English and Gaelic was visiting Peggy at the time.Charlie Schaumberg asked my grandmother in English regarding the lost kids. My grandmother inquired in Gaelic from Peggy. (She had seen them going into Rosses). She replied in Gaelic to my grandmother who relayed the information in English to Mr. Schaumberg who told Mrs. Stout in German where the children could be located. -Old story collected by Anna Jackson |
